5 Drones to talk about when it comes to 360 / VR content

# 1 The CloudlightFPV app,

Developer Kai Aras in collaboration with DJI and German tech company Zeiss created this App. Basically this allows VR headset owners the ability to see the world through a drone’s perspective by simply turning one’s head in any direction. This would be a perfect use case for immersive education. Can you imagine the thrill of a student when he/she can actually see the objects in 360 while flying the drones? This App is available for both iOS and Android. Cloudlightfpv.com

#2 The GoPro Quadropter

Expected to be available in 2016 from Gopro, this is intended to be a high-end device that will let users experiment with photography and videos using the drone. GoPro previously acquired a startup named Kolor, whose technology is serving as the backbone of its virtual reality camera systems. Kolor’s software will turn the photo and video shots into virtual reality while people can use its smartphone app to view the imagery. To get the full effect of virtual reality, users would have to don virtual reality headsets like Oculus and Google Cardboard. www.gopro.com

#3 Parrot’s Bebop 2

At $499, this is a high-end drone with some pretty cool features. This model is faster and more long lasting than the previous editions. Flight time on the drone is almost 25 minutes. Oculus Rift can be used to experience and control the drone but not out of the box. There are a few DIY hacks/videos out there that show you how to integrate the two. You can also fly a Ricoh Theta S on this Bebop 2 to collect your 360’s.

#4 DJI Phantom Series

Phanton Series 3 drone can be modified with a custom gimbal and wireless transmission system to connect to a Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. By wearing the headset and flying a Phantom, users can get a sensation of actually flying and pilot with even greater precision. You are looking at easily shelling out $1300 for this one. #5 eHang Ghost 2.0 VR edition

Leading unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturer EHang announced this month their newest version of its popular Ghost 2.0 drone, which comes with virtual reality goggles. The goggles come with head tracking that allows the drone’s camera to follow a user’s head movements. The basic 2.0 aerial costs about $799 and you can find it at buy.ehang.com

There is also the lily, the automated camera done that follows you around. I am still trying to understand the use case for it. One of my favorites is gearing up for production. Check them out at https://vrhappening.com/attempt-at-combining-value-for-vr-and-drone-markets/
